Crypto in Crisis: Can Decentralized Fintech Hold the Line?

Crypto in Crisis, As global tensions escalate, particularly in the Middle East, Byte-Sized Insight’s latest episode explores crypto’s role during crisis. It goes beyond Bitcoin’s price movement to examine how blockchain can support journalism, distribute aid, and offer financial access.

Crypto in Crisis Moving Markets

In the episode’s first half, host Savannah Fortis is joined by Ray Salmond and Marcel Pechman from Cointelegraph. They analyze how Bitcoin (BTC) has performed amid fears of U.S. involvement in the Israel-Iran conflict.

“There’s a lot of uncertainty, and we see this reflected in gold, silver, U.S. Treasurys—and Bitcoin,” says Salmond.

Pechman notes that while Bitcoin has surged 25% recently, investors still treat it as a risk asset. If panic deepens, prices could fall. Yet both analysts agree: long-term confidence and global liquidity continue to drive demand.

The Power of Blockchain

The episode also spotlights blockchain’s real-world use beyond crypto trading, especially in places where traditional systems collapse.

Megan Klimen, founding officer of the Filecoin Foundation, shares how her team works with Fasila, a group helping journalists in conflict zones store their work using decentralized tech.

“This is journalism that often gets destroyed during regime change,” Klimen explains. “Filecoin can back up all of this critical on-the-ground reporting on an indelible record.”

Listeners also hear from Vivek Raman, CEO of Etherealize, who explains how Ethereum and stablecoins are now key infrastructure in crisis regions.

“A lot of people want access to dollars in times of conflict,” Raman says. “Ethereum is the place of safety, of trust, of value.”

More Than Price Action

In times of crisis, the real test for crypto isn’t just speed or speculation. It’s about what the technology enables: preserving the truth, enabling access, and building resilient systems.
