- 5/16/2017: Federal prosecutors won't seek civil rights charges against a white Mississippi police officer in the June 2016 fatal shooting of a black man following a foot chase. The decision was based on not enough evidence to prove Tupelo Police Officer Tyler Cook deliberately and unlawfully violated the rights of Antwun "Ronnie" Shumpert.
- 5/15/2017: In the first prosecution under the Hate Crimes Prevention Act with a victim who was attacked because of gender identity. Joshua Brandon Vallum got a sentence of 49 years in prison after pleading guilty of killing Mercedes Williamson. Vallum killed Williamson after a friend discovered Williamson was transgender.
