Norway Considers Crypto Mining Ban Amid Energy Concerns

Norway Crypto, Norway’s government may temporarily ban cryptocurrency mining to reduce pressure on the energy grid and free up power.

In a Friday notice, officials said they would launch an investigation this autumn to review the impact of crypto mining. Based on its findings, a temporary mining ban could be introduced by the end of the year.

The government can take action under the Planning and Building Act, which allows it to regulate energy use and land distribution.

“It is uncertain how big a problem crypto mining will become in Norway in the future,” the government said. “The registration requirement in the new data center regulations will provide increased knowledge about the scope of data centers that mine cryptocurrency.”

Rising Costs and Public Pushback

Energy prices in Norway have increased in recent years, partly due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and related supply disruptions. Crypto mining has also drawn complaints from locals because of the noise from large-scale operations.

Officials want to ensure electricity is used for more essential sectors. The government will study how much energy crypto mining uses and decide whether to pause the activity.

Other Countries Have Taken Similar Steps

If the ban moves forward, Norway would join other nations that have restricted mining. In January 2025, Russia banned mining in 10 regions to prevent blackouts and save energy.

In 2021, China issued a full ban on crypto mining, pushing many miners to relocate. Many moved operations to the United States, where mining is still legal in most states.

Despite growing criticism over energy usage, the U.S. remains a global leader in Bitcoin hashrate production.
